Affiliate Institution Rotations
Harborview Burn Center
Harborview Medical Center is the regional burn center and level 1 trauma center for the five state region - WA, WY, AK, MI, ID. As an R1, you will have an unprecedented amount of growth and independence as you manage the burn service including the ICU at night. Your time here provides an understanding of burn care that will guide you through the remainder of residency and practice.
UW Cardiothoracic Surgery
At UW Medical Center you serve as the the R2 on the CT service at major university hospital. You will get exposure to cardiac and lung transplants as well as cardiac and oncologic procedures in the chest. This rotation gives you a broad introduction to cardiothoracic surgery and hones your understanding of critical care in a select patient population.
Harborview Trauma / Surgical ICU
As an R2 at Harborview you are one of the junior residents in the Trauma/Surgical Critical Care Unit. This is a busy and exciting rotation where you will be exposed to challenging patients and become knowledgeable in bedside procedures such as central lines and arterial lines.
Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital
As an R3, for three months you will have the opportunity to focus on nothing but pediatric surgery. This is an excellent rotation to expand your knowledge of pediatric specific pathology as well as get exposure to care of the pediatric trauma patient.
MultiCare Allenmore Hospital
In this R3 rotation, you will work in a high-volume bariatric and foregut surgery service. This is a tremendous opportunity to learn complex laparoscopy from masters in the field; by the end, you will be sewing intracorporeally with no problem.
Harborview Trauma /Acute Care Surgery
The R3 rotation at Harborview is a growth opportunity where you get high-volume trauma surgery exposure. This is also the first opportunity to lead teams of residents in managing huge inpatient services.
Tacoma General
During your three months as an R4 at TG, you will spend time on an surgical-apprenticeship model with a high-volume robotic colorectal surgeon, as well as the surgical oncologists. The experience greatly increases your facility with robotic surgery, and the complex anatomy of HPB surgery.
Sacred Heart Medical Center
Choose your own adventure! For three months as an R4, you have the run of the ORs. In this high-volume center, you can participate in essentially any surgery that occurs. There is no set schedule, prioritize what you (and the American Board of Surgery) find important. This is an exceptional experience.
Harborview Trauma / Acute Care Surgery
Back again as an R4! This is your last rotation at Harborview, and undeniably your best. You alternate between being the chief surgery resident at night and supporting the inpatient trauma and thoracic surgery teams during the days. You frequently operate with just an attending or a fellow and truly gain an understanding of operative trauma.
Tacoma General
When you return to TG as a chief, you will be operating on the acute care surgery and trauma surgery teams. You will work in tandem with junior residents and attendings from Madigan, as well as civilian attendings and APPs to manage a complex service at this busy level 2 trauma center.
